Atmospheric Sound Propagation Over Large-Scale Irregular Terrain
A benchmark problem on atmospheric sound propagation over irregular terrain has been solved using a stable fourth-order accurate nite di erence approximation of a highdelity acoustic model. A comparison with the parabolic equation method and ray tracing methods is made. The results show that ray tracing methods can potentially be unreliable in the presence of irregular terrain.
متن کاملA Three-Dimensional Parabolic Equation Applied to VHF/UHF Propagation over Irregular Terrain
The two-dimensional (2-D) parabolic equation (PE) is widely used for making radiowave propagation predictions in the troposphere. The effects of transverse terrain gradients, propagation around the sides of obstacles, and scattering from large obstacles to the side of the great circle path are not modeled, leading to prediction errors in many situations. In this paper, these errors are addresse...
متن کاملMultilevel Tabulated Interaction Method Applied to UHF Propagation over Irregular Terrain
A multilevel tabulated interaction method (TIM) is described for application to the analysis of exceptionally large two-dimensional (2-D) UHF terrain propagation problems. While standard TIM schemes offer extremely rapid solutions to terrain propagation problems on a medium to large scale ( 20 km), the computation times increase quadratically with problem size. For problems of extremely large s...
متن کاملFree Gaits for Quadruped Robots over Irregular Terrain
Although walking machines exhibit many advantages over wheeled or tracked vehicles, legged vehicles have yet to be introduced in real applications because of the primitive development of specific techniques such as gait generation. This article addresses the design, implementation and experimentation of gaits to negotiate uneven terrain with a real machine. The gaits presented are a mixture of ...
متن کاملVisual control of step length during running over irregular terrain.
Running over uneven ground requires visually regulating step length to secure proper footing. To examine how this is achieved, we studied subjects running on a treadmill on a series of irregularly spaced targets. The movements of their lower limbs and coccyx relative to the targets were monitored opto-electronically by a Selspot system. The results indicated that step length was adjusted to str...
